During the month of June, 15 kids and 2 young adults took time out of their busy summer to READ! Our Stratton kids experienced everything form Pirate Games, Ocean Facts, Oil Spills and Outdoor Water Games to making their own snack each day. The consumed Twinkie Submarines, a Ritz Cracker Octopus, Vanilla Wafer Clams, Ocean Water Jello, Ocean Floats and a Fruit filled watermelon Pirate Ship!
Each week the kids had to Walk the Plank and Dive through the Deep Ocean in order to add stickers to their Treasure Map. Then after enjoying stories, games and activities such as making floating jelly fish- each child would move their submarine or sea animals throughout the ocean to mark the number of books they read that week. After four weeks of maneuvering past Turtle Beach, Sea Monster Bay, Mermaid Cove and Pirate Territory the readers found themselves a little wiser about the ocean, along with the group reading a total of 91 books! 101 reading coupons to be spent at local businesses were earned by the readers. Coupons were earned by the number of books read and how many stickers were earned on the treasure map.
The Library Board issued an ice cream treat coupon for everyone who turned in their Reading Logs on time! By participating in the Oceans of Possibilities Stratton Reading Program our local kids have opened up possibilities for a stronger reading achievement level when the school year starts. Readers were given the privilege of picking awesome ocean-water prizes at the conclusion of our Summer Reading Program.
